Making the mark

Imagine a school...

Where kids have freedom to be themselves...Where success is not defined by academic achievement but by the child's own definition of success...Where the whole school deals democratically with issues, with each individual having an equal right to be heard...Where you can play all day if you want to...And there is time and space to sit and dream......could there be such a school?YES, and it's called SummerhillHere's a video of the students talking about their school.

You can watch a really touching movie on Summerhill here

Be creative:
Now, let's use our imagination a little more...Imagine you've just finished Summerhill and your friend is about to start. He's asked you for some information on what to expect at  school and advice on classes, school rules and so on. Respond to him through an email that you will post as a comment here,.
The email needs to include:
- the new vocabulary
- an overview of what we have learnt on Summerhill
-your personal recommendations

Now let's review the TENSES by looking at this page
First study the tutorials and the do the activities for the tenses you feel you need to revise
so that you're ready for the class review in our next lesson.

  1. Dear Sam,
what's up?How are you? I hope well! Thank you for your lovely letter. Today I'm going to talk you about your future school, Summerhill, where I was some years ago.

Summerhill is a progressive, co-educational, residential school, a 'free scholl' or a democratic community. Summerhill looks equal with all the ather schools, but it has a little diversity: the lessons are optional. This is particulary unusual, which is at any ather school. At Summerhill, students make their on decisions of what lessons they want to attend or not. With this way, children learn how to make choices at their own lives, and have the freedom of choice.

But the lessonsare not the only anusual feature of this school. There is a second feature which called Meeting, where teachers and students discuss and vote for the new laws of the school. The majority votes make the laws(rules) of the school and the teachers and the students have equal votes. At Meeting, a member of staff has not sactions against a pupil and everyone has the same status.

These are the most important information for the Summerhill. And I think you should do well with the teachers, the members of staff and all the pupils if you can and make great choices about your lessons. I have to go now, because it's lunch time. Please write soon and tell me all your news from Summerhill.

    Best regards,
    Dimos

  2. Dear George,
How are you?I hope you are great.I learnt that you are going to Summerhill school and I think you like it.
Firstly.I should tell you that it is a proggressive,co-educational and residential school. Also you should know that all the lessons there are optional. This means that can attend only to the lessons that you like.
Secondly, this school has special laws like the meeting, were the rules are made by the majority vote of pupils and staff. Also pupils and staff have equal votes.
Finaly,I think that it is a very good school were if anyone don’t breaks the law ,everyone lives in harmony.
That’s all for now,I hope you have fun there, good bye.

  3. Hi Steve!
I took your e-mail of you telling me that you're going to Summerhill and I want to tell you a few things about it since I have been there too

What makes Summerhill special is that it looks like a democratic community, with laws and a meeting where both students and teachers can vote for laws and everyone is equal. Also in Summerhill all subjects are optional so that you can attend any lesson you want. This helps you being independed, making descisions about your life and it motivates you to learn.

Summerhill is also an international school.Sometimes newcomers behave(because they might come from a conventional school)rebellous and they wreak havok. They settle down after a while, but it would be better if you wouldn't behave like this. Also take some things with you because this is a residential school.

See you soon and I hope you like Summerhill as I did

  5. Hi Nikol,
How are you? Sorry it’s taken me so long write to you. I am going to give you some information about Summerhill School and you will love it!

Summerhill is a boarding and co- educational school. Summerhill School is a democratic community, where students have their freedom and can choose what they want to do in their lives. All the lessons are optional and you can choose those you like. If you don’t know what lesson to attend you don’t have to concern about it. The staff there will monitor you to watch things that you like to do and then it will help you to choose.

In Spring and Winter the community organize a lot of activities for the children, so they can play. Summerhil is a happy and caring community that recognizes the importance of expressing emotions and learning through feelings. Staff does not use the adult authority to solve problems but these are solved by the older students and friends or by community’s meetings.

These are some important information about summerhill. I think that you’re going to love it like I did.

    BEST WISHES,
    Joanna
